Women Engineers Pakistan's Design & Development Training - Week 1

The WEP Design and Development (DnD) Training sessions started this week, where our trainers briefed the attendees regarding the course objectives, specific outlines, and set expectations for the next two months. These sessions are aimed towards empowering Pakistani youth, with a special focus on women, towards a wider spectrum of technological and digital skills that will aid them in creating better employment opportunities in the near future. These sessions are being conducted in alliance with MIT Enterprise Forum Pakistan.

These weekly workshops occur on Saturday and Sundays and focus on the domains of Graphic Design (held from 3.00 pm - 5.00 pm for female participants only) and Web Development (held from 5.00 pm to 7.00 pm and open for all). The Graphic Design training will also include software proficiency training for industry-specific software such as Photoshop and Illustrator. For Web Development training, the trainers will focus on developing various skill-levels in WordPressHTML, CSS, JavaScript, Bootstrap, PHP, Laravel etc. As per the trainers, the idea behind DnD is to develop the most beneficial skills as per the need of modern digital environment. These sessions will help attendees to transform the knowledge they already have into something they can yield from.

mSITE Study Jam for Mobile Sites Certification in collaboration with Google Developers Group, Islamabad

WEP Campus Ambassador Miss Ayesha Akhtar and her WEP team members conducted a Google Study Jam for Mobile Sites Certification in collaboration with GDG Islamabad at Fatima Jinnah Women University. Mobile Site Certification is a professional accreditation that Google offers to individuals who demonstrate the understanding of basic and advanced aspects of mobile website design and development.

Women Engineers Pakistan held our second conference at LCWU Lahore on December 14th, 2017. A total of 112 women in STEM fields attended the conference. There were sessions regarding:

* WEP activities and Membership benefits, 
* Importance of Role Models in STEM, 
* The Art of Writing a Winning Resume, 
* Importance of Following your Passion


WEP Internships were also announced. Participants who already had working LinkedIn profiles were awarded small tokens. All attendees received certificates for attending.

The passion in the arena was unmatched. WEP was honored to be present among such brilliant and articulate women.

Women Engineers Pakistan first zonal conference was conducted at NUST, PNEC Karachi, with the theme: "STEM Forward: Engineering Bridges over the Gender Gap". There were sessions on:

1) Diversity and Inclusion Training,
2) Survival Kit for the Practical World,
3) WEP membership and benefits, and
4) Work - Life Balance

A Rewards and Recognition ceremony to honor our most talented members was also conducted.

STEMinists of Pakistan - Women Engineers Pakistan at British Council Lahore

Our Pioneering member, Engr. Anum Tariq Khan spoke at the STEMinists of Pakistan: Overcoming Barriers | Lahore event organized by British Council Pakistan on October 28th, 2017. 
Anum spoke about the enablers and barriers for Pakistani women within #STEM fields. Anum's passion for the cause has shown through all three years of her work with Women Engineers Pakistan. For WEP's "Science for Progress" initiative, she has spoken to many young high school girls about the importance of education as a whole, and about STEM in detail. She has also spoken at national level to policy makers within the Higher Education Commission (HEC) and industry, regarding current issues that women face within engineering academia and industry. Anum has led many student-industry linkage events, and has conducted various field-trips for prospective female engineers to different STEM firms. She is also a part of IEEE Women in Engineering, and constantly works for promoting and empowering women.

Women Engineers Pakistan at the Global Women In Leadership Economic Forum (WIL Forum)

This week, our ER manager, Engr. Yusra Shah represented Pakistan and Women Engineers Pakistan at the Global Women In Leadership Economic Forum (WIL Forum). Yusra met with HRH Princess Tessy Antony of Luxembourg, who gave an amazing message "Pakistan is incredibly resourceful country, and you have lots of opportunities, so don't give up! Even if from time to time it is hard, and you are being pushed down, just push back! You can do it, and I am with you!"

Workshop on "Gender Equity in Engineering"

The USAID Pakistan Workshop on "Gender Equity in Engineering" was held in Islamabad with the collaboration of Arizona State University, HEC and Women Engineers Pakistan. Our ER manager Engr. Yusra Shah and Dr. Chad Haines from ASU speak about the Status of Women in STEM fields both in Pakistan and globally.

At the USAID Workshop for Gender Equity in Engineering, 
Women Engineers Pakistan Campus Ambassadors from Lahore and Karachi chapters conducted a panel discussion on "Mentoring University Women" where they highlighted special challenges women face in studying and opting for engineering fields. The outcomes of the panel discussion were:
​

"1) Identify actions to resolve obstacles in studying STEM fields;
2) Identify challenges and solutions to overcome career obstacles;
3) Develop strategies for addressing these challenges, recognizing the socio-cultural norms and the actions women can take to address inequities."

WEP Professional Chapter member Engr. Saliha Akram spoke about "Women Engineers in the Field" at the USAID Workshop on Gender Equity in Engineering. The objectives were "to highlight challenges women face studying engineering, and to identify what positive experiences women engineers had in university", with the hopes to "map out needs for educational institutions to address."

Women Engineers Pakistan at  International Women Leaders Summit

Members of Women Engineers Pakistan (Zone Sindh) participated at the International Women Leaders Summit (IWLS) held earlier this month at Movenpick, Karachi. At this platform for dynamic leaders, and entrepreneurs; opinion makers from across the world came together to share their success stories, inspiring many others in their lead. The 7th IWLS had the privilege of hosting 14 International speakers. Dr.Gülden Türktan, Anabel Gonzalez, Neil Buhne, Daniela Simonetta Sfameni, Squadron Leader Saira Amin, Dr. Adnan Ali Hyder and Dr.Eleni Rossides were most distinguished among others.

Issues surrounding women in all major walks of life were discussed, where the experts shed light from their own personal and professional experiences. Team Women Engineers Pakistan got beneficial insight regarding growth and leadership.

Women Engineers Pakistan at GDI Hacks DIG Buffalo, New York

WEP Founder & CEO Ramla Qureshi represented Women Engineers Pakistan at the GDI Hacks at New York, USA.

This day long Hackathon was open to women of all skill levels during which teams face off to design and develop the best website in a 12 hour period. Between 8 to 10 local minority or women-owned businesses were selected to improve their online presence. Participants then presented their ideas to a panel of judges and prizes were awarded for the most innovative and useful websites.

WEP ER Manager, Engr. Yusra Shah represented Women Engineers Pakistan at The Women in STEM Conference and Awards at Dubai on 25th - 26th October, 2016. Yusra has been an active member of the Women Engineers Pakistan since the days of her bachelors and has worked on many different projects. She is currently the Manager External Relations at Karachi and making immense efforts to take WEP new levels. As a Manager of External Relations, her current focus is to bring, as many professionals, both men and women, for practical implementation of the objectives of WEP. At WiSTEM, she spoke about "Enabling Women [Engineers] in Pakistan."
